Wherever your passport takes you, your luggage comes too. From the clothes you packed to the camera and smartphone that’ll capture moments to remember, your belongings are part of the journey.
Why should I consider travel insurance for my luggage?
Exploring new destinations is part of the thrill. But travelling from A to B also means your belongings can sometimes end up somewhere else entirely. With TID travel insurance for luggage and personal effects, you can travel knowing your items may be covered if they’re lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged.
Protection against theft and loss
Luggage can be lost or stolen during transit, especially during flights with multiple connections. Personal items such as cameras, smartphones, and laptops are common targets for theft. Travel insurance for lost luggage may offer financial protection so you can keep travelling, even if your bags don’t.
Travel insurance cover for accidental damage
Accidents happen, and items like electronics, clothing, sports gear, and souvenirs can be damaged. TID travel insurance may help with repair or replacement costs.
Reimbursement for emergency essentials
If your luggage is delayed in excess of 10 hours, you may be reimbursed for emergency essentials, like clothes and toiletries. Baggage delay cover means you’re not left waiting without what you need. This is a summary only. Cover is subject to the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions of the PDS. Consider the PDS and TMD before purchasing.

What does travel insurance cover for luggage?
What’s covered under travel insurance for luggage and personal effects:
✅ Accidental loss, theft of, or damage to luggage or personal effects, including things you buy during the trip (when accompanying you during your trip).
✅ Loss of, or damage to, dentures or dental prostheses while not in your possession.
✅ Medical consultation fees to replace prescription medication that’s lost, stolen or damaged, plus the cost of the medication itself.
✅ Theft of luggage or personal effects from a locked motor vehicle, motorhome, or caravan with proof of forced entry.
✅ Theft or damage to items kept in a locked storage facility, with proof of forced entry.
What's not covered under baggage insurance
It’s important to know the limits of travel insurance cover. While TID travel insurance for luggage and personal items may cover a lot, here’s what’s typically excluded:
❌ Luggage and personal effects left unattended.
❌ Personal electronics (laptops, cameras, smartphones), jewellery and watches left in a motor vehicle or checked in as luggage.
❌ Watercraft of any type (except surfboards when stolen or damaged while in custody of a carrier).
❌ Sporting equipment when in use.
Cover for valuable items
If your belongings exceed standard sub-limits, you can purchase the ‘Specified items option’ when buying travel insurance. Specifying high value items also avoids having depreciation applied if you need to claim.
An excess still applies, unless you’ve paid to reduce it, and receipts are required to confirm proof of ownership and value.
Cover for sporting equipment
Sporting equipment may be covered if it’s stolen, accidentally lost or damaged, but not when in use.
Important: Snow sports equipment is only covered if you have selected the Snow Sports Cover option and paid the additional premium.

What to do if your luggage is lost overseas
If you are robbed

- Report theft that occurs on public transport or in accommodation to the relevant authority.
- Document all damage or forced entry and take photos.
- Keep all receipts.
If you lose an item
Report the loss to the police or other appropriate authority as soon as you can.
If luggage is lost on transport or in accommodation

Proof of ownership and value
Provide receipts. If you don’t have receipts, you can provide bank statements. There may be alternative options depending on your circumstances that we may use to confirm ownership and value.
Understanding your excess
An excess applies to each luggage and personal effects claim unless you’ve paid to remove it. Your Certificate of Insurance outlines the exact amount.
How much can I claim for lost luggage
The Schedule of Benefits maximum payable per adult traveller, and any applicable item limits for your chosen plan shows the maximum payable per adult traveller. Limits aren’t increased for children. TID won’t pay more than the original purchase price, even if the benefit limit is higher.
After accounting for wear, tear, and depreciation, TID may repair the item, replace it, or pay its depreciated value in cash.
