FAQs for a trip to Hawaii

Medical care is expensive in the USA. You should consider travel insurance as it may help if something goes wrong. With TID travel insurance you may be covered for reasonable and necessary emergency medical, hospital and ambulance expenses. Depending on the plan you choose, (Critical illness or injury – emergency travel expenses for a friend or relative sublimit is not insured under the Basics. You may also be covered if you need dental treatment expenses arising from an injury to healthy natural teeth and which cannot be delayed until your return to Australia.

You do not need a visa if you're travelling from Australia to Hawaii for a holiday. However, there are requirements you must meet. If you plan to remain in the USA for less than 90 days, you may not need a visa, but will need to apply for a US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). It takes about 15- 20 minutes to complete, and according to US Customs and Border Patrol, the ESTA will usually return an application status within 72 hours. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days or are traveling for purposes other than tourism (e.g., to work or study), you will need to apply for a different type of visa.

Cover may be available if pre-paid scheduled public transport services or pre-paid tours have been cancelled or restricted by your carrier or service provider due to a natural disaster such as a volcanic eruption, tornado, earthquake or hurricane. You may be covered for the cost of any lost pre-paid arrangements such as airfares and accommodation. You can also choose to re arrange your trip – so long as it's less than the cost of cancellation. You need to ensure you purchased your policy before the natural disaster became a known event and foreseeable. Natural disasters you may be covered for include flood, cyclone, tornado, hurricane, typhoon, wild fire, tsunami, earthquake, landslide, avalanche, volcanic eruption.

Note: Our definition of Natural disaster’ does not include outbreak of disease, epidemic, pandemic, or any other event that is not specifically included in this definition.

You may be covered for surfing or kayaking subject to all policy terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions. Check if adventure sports are included or need optional cover.
